Flock cameras have come under scrutinty as they are a for-profit corporation making billions of dollars from local governments paying them to surveil & track law-abiding citizens, including here in Athens, Georgia.

Flock Safety systems are being used by the following entities in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia:

  • Athens-Clarke County Police Department

  • Clarke County Sheriff’s Office

  • University of Georgia Police Department

  • Winterville Police Department

Athens-Clarke County Government’s Mayor & Commission voted to create the “Real-Time Crime Center”. The RTCC relies upon Flock Safety Cameras & tech to surveil our Athens community & residents, even if they have committed no crimes.

Flock Safety is a billion dollar corporation, based out of Atlanta, GA. Many government entities on the local, state, and Federal levels have partnered with Flock Safety to put up over 130,000 cameras across 6,000 US comunities. These cameras capture vehicle license plates, vehicle features, and movements, totaling over 20 billion scans every month.

There are around 120 Flock Cameras in Athens-Clarke County. These cameras can be placed by Police Departments, but also private property owners, HOAs, Neighborhood Associations, etc.

  • DEFLOCK.ORG: Deflock is an open-source, volunteer run website that is tracking the placement of Flock cameras, and other ALPR cameras, across the Country.

  • HAVEIBEENFLOCKED.COM: A website that pulls together Flock audit data and can help you find out if you have been recorded and where/when cameras are being accessed by ACCPD and other entities.

  • ACLU’s Get the Flock Out campaign: resources and information on data privacy concerns and issues being driven by the presence of Flock and other ALPRs.

How do we De-Flock Athens?

Things that you can do to help:

  • Speak at Mayor & Commission meetings on the first Tuesday of every month at 6pm. The Open Public Comment period is at the end of the meeting.

  • Contact the Mayor and your Commissioner:

  • Join the De-Flock Athens movement and look for announcements

  • Understand who has been pushing Flock in Athens:

    • Many ACC Commissioners, including Mayor-Elect Dexter Fisher, worked to fund the RTCC and Flock in Athens

    • The Classic City Crime Podcast has been doing pro-Flock episodes of the podcast, even inviting Flock’s Director of Product Consulting & fired ACCPD RTCC Director onto the podcast for episodes

    • SafeD Athens, a conservative nonprofit “dedicated to enhancing safety and security in Athens” but based out of Fayetteville, GA
